Research Posters (week28)

Team Robot  Hewitt, J. 2017
What is your evaluation of the project and the project idea to date? Who does it benefit?

This has been a very interesting experience for me, coming from industry I am used to working with specialists to perform specific tasks relevant to their expertise.
My expertise is obviously making costumes, which has not been an obvious relevancy for this project which needed a website and a graphic poster and a presentation......so it has been a steep learning curve to dive out of my comfort zones and have a go at writing voice overs, mocking up posters, organise schedules and plan presentations. I have enjoyed working with the team very much, we have complimented each others skills I think, and keeping the dialogue going almost constantly in WhatsApp has led to a very tight focused and supportive group.

The research elements have obviously been fascinating and I have added considerably to my knowledge of digital technologies in the textile industry which is of great use to my wider MA work. The statistics of fabric waste came as quite a shock, even though I decided early on in my personal projects to work in half scale to minimise these.

The final idea for the Vir-Toile is, I think a really clever one. It could be used both by industry to cut costs and hit waste-reducing targets in a professional capacity, but it also has great application for home-entertainment and student use... VR has been primarily driven by the games market - domestic use and domestic sales far outstrip commercial buyers of VR systems. (M has been delegated and subsequently found many great statistics for use in the project) Vir-Toile might one day be the link between one off custom garments designed at home but cut out and sewn up by robots in factories elsewhere.... I am excited by both the present and future possibilities of this product.

I was a little surprised when we finally saw some research posters however. I had done a mock up on the assumption we were creating a "poster" ie a marketing tool for our product. Research posters are very different animals, akin more to museum or exhibition information panels with large amounts of information about the research and development of the project as a whole rather than the specific product concept.

Fortunately we had held back from really getting stuck into the design aspects of this, and now I understand a little more of what is needed I have been able to make another mock up ready for the team to view and comment on next week.

I have also written the final voice overs ready for recording on Wednesday and taken a lot of photographs for the website. I am very pleased with the group photo, I took an initial one of M,B and R then M took one of me and I composited them together.... B is going to try a few other effects, we have discussed a sort of pixelated/disintegrating bottom edge to look as if we are reforming from raw data... I am going to try and incorporate that concept into the research panel posters as well. M has been finding awesome statistics for us to use, B and R are working on some Infographics....
