Archives and how to get lost in them

looking at Archives, what are they, how can they be used. How to engage with them in different and new ways.

Looked at several case studies of artists using archives in different ways. from reconstructing lace fragments digitally to creating stories from ephemera.
Interesting paper on Costume shop hire as archive.... value increased if a famous person wears it?

Nature of a "turn" - a resurfacing idea or theme that appears again and again
how does our study change the nature of the archive.
Relevance and importance of items may be different to a creative than a historian

An archive has a retrieval system and is not open to public. A museum is open to public with items on display.

work in archives can often be an interdisciplinary practise.

Must look for archives of technological advances.... revisit catalogue of robots from the Science museum exhibit Magda and I went to exhibitions/robots

Lego women of NASA series Hewitt, J. (2017) I have been very much enjoying the guest lecturers this term. First Dr Parik Goswami introduced us to the world of Innovation, Invention and Exploitation. Invention being a new idea and innovation being the development and implementation of an idea, while exploitation is the final stage that of marketing/selling/using the innovation. He encouraged us to think big, not worry about trying to do everything ourselves, join forces, employ others and not limit ourselves. Respecting other disciplines, breaking down boundaries and collaborating to grow beyond our niche interests. Team robot met today to discuss the initial Ideas we had come up with individually - M has joined us so we now have 2 pattern cutters in the mix. After looking at current technologies and trying to think beyond what is already possible, my final contributions were, An online training academy to inspire young designers to work digitally. Having run into so many problems attempting to learn pattern software I thought a course of simple, well presented tutorials for optitex, MD etc and a supportive design based rather than tech based community would encourage new ways of working among young design and cutting students. Pitch Presentation created by Team Robot in Google Slides 2017 Our Vir-Toile Pitch Presentation had lots of great research, (Following my Pitch Plan, we each undertook to research one company and one aspect of the project, make a slide, write a paragraph and then compile everything together) but the pitch did not contain as many facts and figures as we felt the project could do with, so Team Robot sat down, brainstormed and wrote a list of questions we wanted real figures for These included.... How much water does it take to grow the cotton to make 1m of calico? How much calico does a design studio use for toiles each week? how much of that is thrown away?
